Maylarch
Eynsham 10k 2005

Race Report by Derek
Breaker
The annual 10k road race
sponsored by Maylarch took place in Eynsham on Sunday 27th
November. The event, organised by Eynsham Roadrunners, consisted of a
two lap course around the village with the race headquarters based at
Bartholomew School. We were delighted that the race limit of 600 runners
was reached four weeks before the event but disappointed for the 200 who
unfortunately applied after the limit was attained. By using the school
as our base we were able to provide a warm comfortable environment for
runners and spectators before and after the race with changing and
shower facilities, refreshments and a sports goods stall.
The 10k race started at
10:30 from Old Witney Road, the runners soon stringing out to form a
seemingly endless stream around the village. Spectators strategically
located outside the school were able to cheer on their favourites or
loved ones on three separate occasions. At the half way mark last years
winner Andrew Gardiner was neck and neck with Oxford City’s Steve Male,
followed closely by Vasili Zverev of Headington Roadrunners, Andrew
Prophett of Cheltenham and Stephen Kimber of Windsor, Slough and Eaton.
In the final stages Steve managed to pull away from Andrew Gardiner,
winning by just three seconds in a time of 31.57, with Andrew Prophett a
further 43 seconds back.
In the ladies race Witney
Roadrunners Nikki Slater was first home in 35.49, a full one minute
ahead of Kim Green of Telford AC. This race was the last in the Grand
Prix series. The main race was accompanied by a 1 mile fun run aimed at
juniors not old enough to run the 10k. 60 took part. A trophy was
awarded to the first boy and girl under 15 years, George Reynolds and
Katherine Smith, respectively.
Mr Phil Brown presented
trophies and County Championship medals in the school hall, from our
main sponsors Maylarch.
Many thanks to our numerous
sponsors, St John Ambulance, Oxon A.A. officials and the dozens of
marshals and helpers who gave up their Sunday to make Eynsham 10k such a
success.
